Dispatch #3 – A New America

Following January 20th 2017, and the inauguration of Donald J. Trump, the country has undergone some serious changes. In the course of 8 days, we’ve seen executive orders signed, public protests turn violent, and a transformation of power throughout the world.

Donald Trump has become synonymous with power and rule of law. Within hours of his presidency, Trump signed an executive order to reduce the “burdens of Obama care” on Americans. Following this, he secured positions for General Mattis as Secretary of Defense, and General Kelly as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.  In the days following, several strong arm measures have taken place including the controversial executive order on immigration and refugee status. The ACLU is seeking to file suit against this order, and has openly condemned the new order as “violating establishment clause”. The presumption of the ACLU is based on religious discrimination.

The full text of Trumps executive order titled Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United Statesasserts the strong stance of banning travel from known terror hubs, and makes little concessions to visa holding travelers. Some media entities state it is more akin to a “Muslim Ban” which is the stance the ACLU will use in its defense, but upon our analysis of the physical document, we were unable to verify these claims. We do not interpret that the stronger vetting measures are solely based on religion. We did find that within the order are connections made to ‘violent ideology’ and a connection to certain radical belief systems that are inconsistent with the laws of the United States. This did not correlate to Islam itself, but could be connected to Islamic Wahhabism or terrorism through radicalization. Many individuals have found themselves in a legal quandry as they may be detained by HSI and ICE agents in compliance with these orders, even with permanent residencies or green cards. Homeland security has responded to these claims by a press release addressing concerns as follows.

“…These individuals went through enhanced security screenings and are being processed for entry to the United States, consistent with our immigration laws and judicial orders.

The Department of Homeland Security will faithfully execute the immigration laws, and we will treat all of those we encounter humanely and with professionalism. No foreign national in a foreign land, without ties to the United States, has any unfettered right to demand entry into the United States or to demand immigration benefits in the United States.”

Following growing tensions throughout the United States, individuals have taken to streets in protest of Trump as “The Women’s March” took place in major cities all over the country. The intentions of the group were feminist initiatives which included greater access to contraceptives, pro-choice talking points, and equal pay. More specifically though, the march was to openly condemn the new administration for their ‘bigotry and sexism’. Many of these accusations stemmed from a tape which was released during the Trump campaign in which Trump used explicit language and vulgarity referencing women. This march remained relatively peaceful in nature, and yielded 0 arrests according to The Hill. While no arrests were taken, Madonna who was a keynote speaker at the event openly stated a threat to the white house. The Secret Service is aware of the statement and may be pursuing further investigation if deemed a legitimate threat.

“Yes, I am angry…Yes, I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”

-Madonna At Women’s March DC

It should be noted that while “The Womens March” was held, the following weekend was one of the largest gatherings of pro-life students and activists in the “March For Life” which reportedly had significant attendees was covered less than the previous event by mainstream media. We would like to note that the “March For Life” has been a massive event. In 2013 alone, the event brought over 650,000 people to DC. This event and march was also largely peaceful and 0 arrests were reported. In addition to the executive order on immigration, Donald Trump has ended support of foreign nations abortions and returned to the “Mexico City Policy”. This is a clear shift towards pro-life policy by the new administration.

In addition, Trump has ordered immediate operations to begin an expedited process of building a wall along the US Southern border with the country of Mexico. The original claim of having “Mexico pay for the wall” has caused president Enrique Peña Nieto to cancel a meeting in DC. He later discussed issues with Trump over the phone. The latest occurrences have sparked protests throughout major cities including Portland, New York, and Los Angeles. Portland in particular has had several protests turn riotous in nature.

The Portland Police arrested a total of 71 individuals in Saturday’s violent protests in which vandalism and riotous situations occured. The protests throughout these areas originated as peaceful demonstrations but quickly erupted into mob vandalism. In addition to Portland, Washington DC itself experienced a wave of violence spurred by the #DisruptJ20 movement. Protestors were seen carrying signs reading “No Peaceful Transfer Of Power”, and several buildings were damaged including public infrastructure.

These protests are yet to leave their impact on the future of President Donald Trump, but they’ve cost affected cities thousands of dollars. The incarceration costs of these individuals alone can be a burden to the law abiding tax payers in the region. Supporters of Trump claim this new wave of unlawful protest and rioting will result in an American backlash to mainstream social trends. Pundits state that these protests are only a living example of the divisiveness in the country today.

With all these occurrences, it is clear that the future of the United States remains uncertain, and as Donald Trump continues to bring his policy claims into Policy action, more civil unrest is expected.
